What are Florida’s minimum SR22 insurance coverage limits?

Florida’s minimum SR22 coverage is as follows:

• Bodily injury/death of one person $10,000
• Bodily injury/death of two or more persons $20,000
• Property damage $10,000

When you speak with an insurance provider or on the insurance policy these limits will be noted as such: 10/20/10

Please note that these are the absolute minimum auto insurance coverage limits and should only be used as guidelines when choosing your insurance coverage limits. We typically recommend that people choose a policy with coverage limits of at least 50/100/50 and preferably a policy with limits of 100/300/100.

The higher limits help to cover you in case you are in an accident with a highend car like a BMW that costs $80,000 and is totaled and you are found to be at fault in the accident.

How long do I have to keep my SR22 insurance in Florida?

The Florida DMV will require you to maintain your SR22 insurance filing with them for a period of 3-years from the date of having your driver's license reinstated or from the date that you were issued a restricted license. The 3-year filing period does not vary based on the reason for the suspension.

If at any time during your 3-year SR22 filing period you experience a lapse in your insurance coverage due to failure to pay your premiums on time your insurance provider is obligated by law to inform the Florida DMV of such a lapse in coverage, even if it is for one day. When this occurs the Florida DMV will send you a letter in the mail informing you that they have once again suspended your driver's license and that you will need to file a new SR22 form with the DMV and pay another license reinstatement fee before your license will be reinstated and you will be legal to drive again.

How do I reinstate my license following a revocation for being a habitual traffic offender?

After 1-year of the 5-year revocation has lapsed you may request a hardship license by contacting the Administrative Review Office where you live. If alcohol was not involved you will be required to attend and complete an Advanced Driver Improvement School before being issued a hardship license. If alcohol was involved you will be required to attend and complete DUI School.

If you wait out the 5-year revocation period in lieu of obtaining a hardship license you will still need to contact a Administrative Review Office near you before your license will be reinstated.
